Hedgehog has bad breath?
Bad breath in hedgehogs is indicative of a possibility of several health problems, which will require the examination of a veterinarian skilled in hedgehog treatment. The possibilities are a mouth abscess, tumor, tooth decay, solid food stuck in the mouth, and/or other problems. African hedgehogs, if healthy, should have no body or mouth odor. Sometimes, a certain brand of food may cause breath and/or poop odor. What are you feeding him? Here at the rescue, for years we have been using six varieties of Royal Canin dry cat food (primarily Babycat 34 for youngsters and underweight hedgehogs, Kitten 36 and Selective 34/29 for medium weight hedgehogs, and Indoor 40 for large hedgehogs). Our veterinarians recommend it and the hedgehogs like it - plus we have not had any odor problems with it. Best wishes, Z. G.
