Why is my male hedgehog so mean?

I bought a two 3 month old hedgehogs and the female is nice and calm but the male spikes up the second i enter the room where the cage is at, starts hissing and twitching. He is very nervous towards anything and has already bit me. but if i get him on the bed n leave him alone n slowly pet his spikes he calms down a bit, though not entirely. he calms and starts self-anointing. The second he goes back in his cage, its as if nothing has changed and he is as aggressive as always. Whats wrong and what can i do to change this?
